Welcome to the Holistic Counseling Podcast

Welcome to the Holistic Counseling Podcast, the go-to resource for mental health therapists who want to deepen their knowledge of holistic modalities and build their practice with confidence. I’m your host, Chris McDonald, a licensed therapist. Today, I’m thrilled to share seven self-care practices that you might not have heard of. These techniques can transform your wellness journey and help you become more balanced and rejuvenated.

  1. Mindful Scheduling

Your schedule significantly impacts your self-care as a counselor. Overloaded schedules without breaks lead to exhaustion and burnout. Tailor your schedule to fit your natural rhythms and prioritize activities that recharge you. For example, my schedule includes a mix of client sessions, podcasting, and content creation, allowing me to maintain my energy levels. What works for you? Reflect on your values and adjust your schedule to support your well-being.

  1. Labyrinth Walking

Labyrinth walking is a meditative practice that dates back thousands of years. Unlike mazes, labyrinths have a single path to the center and back, promoting relaxation and contemplation. Start by grounding yourself, perhaps with a yoga pose, and slowly walk the labyrinth, focusing on your breath or a specific question. This practice helps reduce stress, balance the nervous system, and encourage self-reflection.

  1. Energy Clearing

Managing your energy is crucial in holistic counseling. Negative energy from clients or surroundings can cling to you, affecting your mind, body, and spirit. One effective practice is to ask yourself, “Is this mine or someone else’s?” If it’s not yours, mentally let it go and send loving-kindness to its source. Visualization techniques, like imagining an energetic shield, can also help protect your energy field.

  1. Tree Hugging

Embrace the benefits of connecting with nature through tree hugging. Studies show that proximity to trees can significantly impact emotional and physical well-being, shifting us from a state of stress to relaxation. Build a relationship with trees by spending time near them, touching their bark, and eventually hugging them if you feel comfortable. Trees can offer a unique source of grounding and healing energy.

  1. Binaural Beats

Binaural beats involve listening to two slightly different frequencies in each ear, creating a beat that can influence your brain waves. Depending on the frequency, binaural beats can promote deep sleep, relaxation, focus, and even cognitive enhancement. Try incorporating binaural beats into your routine to experience benefits like reduced anxiety and improved mood.

  1. Mudras

Mudras are hand positions used in yoga to regulate the nervous system and enhance meditation. A simple and effective mudra is the Dhyana Mudra: place your left hand over your lower abdomen with the palm facing up, right hand on top of the left, and touch your thumbs together. This mudra can ground you and be used with breathing exercises or affirmations to promote calm and focus.

  1. Dream Lists

Create a dream list on your phone’s notes app to keep track of places you want to visit and activities you want to try, both locally and globally. This practice keeps your sense of adventure alive and helps you plan fun and fulfilling experiences. Whether it’s a new restaurant, a day trip, or a dream vacation, having a list can inspire you to explore and enjoy life outside of your counseling role.

Conclusion

These seven innovative self-care practices offer fresh ways to nurture your holistic well-being. From mindful scheduling to dream lists, each technique provides unique benefits to help you stay balanced and energized. Try incorporating these practices into your routine and see how they enhance your self-care journey.
